Częstochowa

Czestochowa is considered the spiritual capital of Poland.

Some even call it the religious capital of Poland.

The city features a Marian shrine of Jasna Gora, and is one of the most important places of worship of Virgin Mary, and for hundreds of years, it has been the most important centre of pilgrimages in Poland. Paulinite monks are in charge of the Jasna Góra monastery.

In Jasna Gora, there is the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, and a collection of other works of art, mostly sacral, most of which are votive offerings from believers.

The place gained particular importance for the Poles after the Lviv Oaths, taken by King Jan Casimir on 1st April, 1657, when the king recognized the Mother of God as the Queen of Poland. On March 16th, 1657, he arrived at Jasna Gora and prayed there to save the Polish Res Publica against Protestant Swedish and Hungarian troops.

The monastery became famous during the "Swedish Deluge" in 1655, when a siege of the Swedish army was thwarted. The prior of the monastery was then Father Augustyn Kordecki. The Defence of Jasna Gora was primarily a triumph in a religious and symbolic dimension.

In the times of Polish People's Republic, on 26th August, 1956, with the participation of about 1,000,000 believers took Jasna Gora Vows of the Polish Nation, formulated by the Primate of the Millennium, Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski.

Pope John Paul II felt very strong bonds with the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa, who, as the Pope visited the place six times. After a memorable assassination attempt in 1981, the Pope gave Our Lady his blood-stained belt with a mark of the bullet. In 1983, he prayed here thanking for saving his life. In 2006, the Jasna Gora was also visited by Holy Father Benedict XVI.

Visiting the monastery one can see, inter alia: the Treasury, the Knights' Hall, the Chapel of Remembrance of the Nation, Refectory, Tower, the Golgotha of Jasna Gora, and the Way of the Cross. Every summer, from a number of Polish cities, walking pilgrimages set off to Jasna Gora. The Walking Pilgrimage to Czestochowa from Krakow is approx. 130 km long.
